I too have seen a bunch of stoicism recently in male circles. But hadn’t put together what you have here…that it’s being sold mostly as self help. I agree, that is definitely selling it short.
It's having quite a moment. I think a lot of it is young men needing something or anything to turn to, and Ryan Holiday is a great writer with stoicism being his wheelhouse. I think, in a way, the two converged.
I have nothing against the self-help field per se, but I think it's incomplete. If self-help always stops with the self, then what good is it outside of stroking our egos? I think self-help is only meaningful if we use it so we can help those around us.
